Apr 26, 2018"Poetry as a Homeland": A Willing Book Collection
What follows is a condensed version of the winning essay and annotated bibliography submitted to the Book Collecting Contest by Erin O'Malley, a freshman majoring in comparative literature at the University of Rochester. The Friends of the University of Rochester (FURL) Student Book Collecting Contest has taken place for over twenty years. The contest is open to both UR undergraduates and graduates, through the submission of an essay that describes the purpose and method behind their book collection, why it is meaningful to them, and their ideas for its future development. The collections are not judged on size or monetary value, but instead on how the entrant describes the importance the collection holds for them personally.

My group and I decided to do research at RBSCP on Rochester’s unknown women. Outreach Librarians Kristen Totleben and Alan Unsworth with Phillip Koyoumjian, instructor for HIS198: Science, Sex and Society in Victorian Britain, approached Liz Call, Outreach Librarian for Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation (RBSCP) about having students engage with rare books to compliment what they were learning in the classroom. The students "speed-dated" with a selection of mostly Victorian-era books that deal with love in some way and selected one that appealed to them. They then were tasked with carefully analyzing their book and writing a brief blog post. Students will share their experiences tomorrow, February 14th, in Evan Lams Square in Rush Rhees Library from 11:30am-1pm (this event is part of a series of events, "Love in the Library," taking place tomorrow).
