Charles Howell Ward papers

Charles Howell Ward (1862-1943), osteologist and preparateur of anatomical models, was the son of Professor Henry A. Ward, founder of Ward's Natural Science Establishment in Rochester. He attended Alfred College for two years after he returned from sea; after a stint with the Army in the Southwest, he joined his father's business, in the Department of Human Anatomy, in 1885. He left his father's firm in 1899 to found the Charles H. Ward Anatomical Laboratory, which he continued to operate until his death. He prepared an exhibit for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 while he was employed at the Ward's Natural Science Establishment, and he was known for his preparation of the "Bear Hunt" at the Buffalo Medical School, exhibits for the Army Medical Museum, casts of remains of prehistoric man, and a great variety of models for the teaching of anatomy. He was a member of the Rochester Dental society, the Rochester Academy of Science, and the American Association of Anatomists. The collection consists of correspondence and business records of the Charles H. Ward Anatomical Laboratory, Rochester, New York; personal correspondence, diaries and accounts of Charles H. Ward; notes on the chemical and other technical processes involved in the preparation of anatomical models, and other scientific subjects; photographs relating to osteology and the preparation of models; published articles written by Charles H. Ward and catalogues of the Charles H. Ward Anatomical Laboratory; personal memorabilia; and a collection of pamphlets on osteology and related scientific subjects. In 1992, the arrangement and housing of the photographs (formerly Container 12) was upgraded, and the photograph collection was split into two boxes. Two binders of photocopies of the photographs, which serves as the index to them, is kept with the registers in the workroom; please inquire at the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. The photos in these two boxes date from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection includes photos from a German anatomical supply company. Several folders contain examples of Charles H. Ward's work in osteology including children's skeletons, syphilitic skeletons, and skeletons of very tall persons. Miscellaneous photographs of meteors and a trip to China and the Pacific are also in the collection
