Title: Inventory of Writings, Illustrations and Artifacts in Agnes Jeffrey's Sentiment Album
Date range: 1827-1876
Location: CX27
Size: 1 Volume
Bound album of 346 pages; paper watermarked: J. Whatman/Turkey Mill/1827
'This sentiment album was kept by Agnes Jeffrey beginning in 1827. Miss Jeffrey was born in Scotland (probably Edinburgh) in 1806 and emigrated to the United States in 1837, settling first in Canandaigua, New York, and then in Rochester. She was an instructor of drawing and painting at the Ontario Female Seminary in Canandaigua for twenty-one years (1838-1859) before removing to Rochester to care for the children of her younger brother, William Jeffrey (1812-1867). Miss Jeffrey remained in Rochester until her death in 1897; she was a resident of the city's Third Ward and is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
The album consists of a collection of drawings, paintings, cut paper pieces, poetry and pressed vegetation; the objects contained were made or written by friends and family. They represent the scenery near their homes in Scotland, Canada, and America; memories of journeys to European sites as well as copies of images and literature found in popular journals and books of the time.
Many of Agnes Jeffrey's family members contributed to the album, including all of her sisters, two of her brothers and several nieces and nephews. Their names (Jeffrey, Stewart, Cunningham, Renwick) are given in the inventory below, and their life dates can be found in Genealogy of the Jaffrey-Jeffrey Family by Helen H. McIver (Washington, D.C.: 1925) which is shelved in the Rare Book collection under the call number CS 71 f.J17m 1989.
'The leaves in the album are not numbered; only pages which include entries are listed so that missing numbers only reflect blank, and not missing, pages. All paintings and drawings are indicated by the underlining of their titles as given by the artist, and media and dimensions are given. All other titles for paintings and drawings are descriptions and are indicated by the use of [brackets]. Poetry and other written pieces are indicted by the use of quotation marks. Titles are given as inscribed; all other entries for written pages are first lines copied out. Literary citations are given in brackets where identification could be made. All information in brackets was added in 1989 and does not appear in the book. An asterisk next to a page number indicates that the work is not affixed to or set into a page, but is inserted (free) in front of the page given. 'This inventory was made at Memorial Art Gallery in the spring of 1989 following the exhibition "The Genteel Pastime: 19th-Century Watercolors by the Ladies of the Jeffrey Family". The album was included in that exhibit. Sandra Markham June 1, 1989
