Biographical/Historical Note
Helen Caroline Hess (1911-1990) attended East High School in Rochester, New York. She graduated from the University of Rochester in 1933, with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. She was a member of Theta Tau Theta sorority, the sorority council, the Marsiens honor society, and Phi Beta Kappa. Hess's activities included serving as editor-in-chief of Croceus, news editor of Cloister Window, and associate editor of the Blue Book for incoming freshman; serving as class historian; and playing hockey. Hess worked in the film testing division of the Eastman Kodak Company. She was a member of Brick Presbyterian Church, and her interests included photography.
Scope and Content
This photograph album created by Helen C. Hess (Class of 1933) contains images of the University of Rochester's Prince Street Campus, River Campus, Memorial Art Gallery, and Commencement 1933. It also contains photographs of downtown Rochester and a fire on Lake Avenue in 1935. A number of images show Hess and friends on trips to parks and other sites in the surrounding area, including Conesus Lake, the Adirondacks (for a state geologic field trip), Durand Eastman Park, Ellison Park, Roseland on Canandaigua Lake, Niagara Falls, Hemlock Lake Park, Powder Mills Park, Hamlin Beach Park, and Letchworth Park.
