Biographical / Historical

Robert H. McCambridge was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on 14 March 1921. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from the Rhode Island College of Education in 1942. From 1942 to 1945 McCambridge served in the United States Navy as an aviator aboard the U.S.S. Biloxi and at the Naval Air Station in Monterey, California. He was awarded the Pacific-Asiatic Campaign Ribbon with eight battle stars as well as the Philippine Liberation Campaign Ribbon with two battle stars. McCambridge received his master’s degree in education and his doctorate in education from Cornell University in 1947 and 1951, respectively.

McCambridge served as Administrative Assistant to Cornelis W. de Kiewiet when he was Acting President of Cornell University, from 1949 to 1951. After de Kiewiet left Cornell to become President of the University of Rochester, McCambridge became Assistant to Cornell President Deane W. Malott. Within the year, de Kiewiet created a new position at the University of Rochester for an Administrative Secretary of the University and appointed McCambridge to fill it. As Administrative Secretary, McCambridge assisted President de Kiewiet, the Board of Trustees, and other officials in organizing administrative tasks that related to the University as a whole. McCambridge held this position for seven years until he became University Secretary and Director of Registration at the University of Rochester in 1958. In this role, McCambridge’s duties included coordinating University events on campus and publishing the weekly University calendar. McCambridge also served as a member of the River Campus Administrative Committee while he held this position.

In October 1961, soon after de Kiewiet stepped down as President of the University, McCambridge was appointed Associate Director of the New York State Education Department’s newly created Office of Management and Planning for Higher Education. He held this position until he was named Assistant Commissioner in Higher Education Planning by New York State Education Commissioner James E. Allen Jr. in August 1965.

McCambridge died on 10 May 2007.
