Biographical/Historical Note
W. Allen Wallis was officially inaugurated on May 17, 1963 as the sixth President of the University of Rochester. The two-day festivities consisted of an Eastman Philharmonic concert directed by Dr. Howard Hanson, luncheon at the Women's Center on the River Campus, and dinner at the Sheraton Hotel that included an invocation by Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein. The ceremony itself saw honorary degrees awarded several important individuals, including George Wells Beadle, President of the University of Chicago; Howard Hotelling and Leonard J. Savage, economists and old friends of Wallis's; and former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, for whom Wallis and Richard Nixon had worked on the Cabinet Committee on Price Stability for Economic Growth in the 1950s.
Scope and Content
The collection consists primarily of background material such as drafts, lists, and correspondence. There are also many certificates sent from other colleges and universities to congratulate President Wallis and the University of Rochester on his appointment.
