Biographical/Historical Note
John Robert Trayhern was a Rochester native and member of the University of Rochester Class of 1934. He received his MA in philosophy from the University in 1935 and was named Assistant Professor of Philosophy later that year. From 1945-46 he took a leave of absence to serve as an economic analyst with the US Foreign Service. During this time he was also on the staff of Robert Murphy, political advisor on German affairs in the US zone of occupation.

Trayhern eventually completed his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1949 and returned to the University of Rochester as Assistant to the Dean of the College for Men. He resigned February 1951 to become director of a research group with the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC.

Scope and Content
The Trayhern Papers consist of material related to two academic conferences and Trayhern's role as a Sector Warden for the University's branch of the Office of Civilian Defense during World War II.
