Biographical/Historical Note
When Suzanne Jagel O'Brien (Class of 1959) was a junior at the University of Rochester, there was no formal study abroad program. Very few students left the country during their studies and those who did had to plan the trip themselves. This gave O'Brien and her five classmates a great deal of freedom. They spent their time essentially roaming Europe, touring not only Paris but also London, Vienna, Florence, Munich, and Brussels.
During her stay in mostly France from 1957 to 1958, O'Brien wrote her parents in Queens, New York every few days to let them know what she was up to. Her parents kept her correspondence for years before returning them. Finding that the ink was fading, O'Brien typed a complete transcript before donating everything to the University Archives in 2010.
Suzanne O'Brien eventually returned to UR and served a variety of posts throughout her forty-five-year career, most recently Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Director of the College Center for Academic Support. She received a Goergen Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Learning in the College in 2003 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Susan B. Anthony Center in 2007.
