Biographical/Historical Note
Alan Valentine, President of the University of Rochester, was the Secretary of the National Orchestral Survey.

Scope and Content
Correspondence, mimeographed material, and typescript final reports relating to the survey of the Rochester Civic and Philharmonic Orchestras which was conducted in 1937 by Herman S. Hettinger. Some material (mostly correspondence) relates to the overall project, the National Orchestral Survey, which was conducted in 1938 and 1939 by Dr. Hettinger.
