Biographical/Historical Note
Monatspost was a monthly periodical founded in 1938 by Arthur Hanhardt, a Professor of German at the University of Rochester, and one of his colleagues. It was printed in German especially for students learning the language and featured articles on contemporary life and culture in German-speaking lands. Monatspost was originally called Jugendpost. The name was changed in 1959 to reflect the periodical's aim at students of German at all levels and not just beginners.
Hanhardt edited the publication for the next thirty years. In 1960 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit by the Federal Republic of Germany "in appreciation and recognition of the large contribution made to the German-American friendship." By the time it ceased publication in 1967, Monatspost was being used widely used in colleges and schools in the United States and abroad. Professor Hanhardt retired a year later.
