Biographical/Historical Note
The South Asia Language and Area Center was established at the University of Rochester in 1964 under a grant from the United States Office of Education (National Defense Education Act, Title VI). Previously existing courses in South Asian studies were supplemented by new curricula in elementary Hindi and Indian civilization. The SALAC was an interdisciplinary program with courses based in the departments of linguistics, religion, fine arts, foreign and comparative literature, and anthropology. The SALAC ran until the 1972/1973 academic year.
Scope and Content
The South Asia Language and Area Center papers consist of correspondence and other documentation relating to the SALAC, including material from the office of Provost McCrea Hazlett, who served as director of the SALAC coordinating committee.
Arrangement
Files within each of the two series (1964/1965 Subject Files and 1965/1966 Subject Files) are arranged alphabetically.
