Biographical / Historical note

Bond Bread was introduced by the General Baking Company in 1915 in Rochester, NY at the factory on North Street. Company president William Deininger held a contest in 1915 to determine a better recipe for the company’s Superior Bread, asking housewives to send in their best recipes. Bond Bread was a main competitor to Wonder Bread, first produced by Continental Baking in 1921.

Scope and Contents

The Bond Bread banner reads, “10th BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK – more than ever housewives appreciate home-like Bond Bread.” The label “Sweeney Litho Co., Bellevue, N.J.” in the lower right corner has been covered over with black marker ink.

The Bond Bread banner is one white cloth banner, dimensions 4’ 5.5” x 2’ 5”, with metal grommets for hanging, printed in blue and orange ink.
