Biographical/Historical Note
John McMann served in the 100th New York State Volunteer Infantry division from November 27, 1861-March 6, 1865. 1st Lieutenant McMann suffered a wound and was characterized as missing after the attack on Fort Wagner. He recovered and on February 2, 1865, he assumed command of the unit and served as Captain until his discharge in March 1865. Prior to serving in the infantry, McMann worked at the Monroe County Penitentiary.
Scope and Content
The John McMann Papers consists of 12 letters sent from McMann to his sister between 1862 and 1864. There is one military orders document issued by Q.A. Gilmore, as well as one letter sent from Jennie R. Baldwin to Mrs. McMann, December 30, 1882, and a letter sent from [McGraugen?] to G.L. Adams Esquire in 1884 regarding military benefits.
