Biographical / Historical note

George Walter Derham (1885-1984), proprietor of Derham's Garage for general automobile repair, lived with his wife, Emma, in Rochester, NY. Derham was active in the Memorial A.M.E. Zion church, serving on its board of trustees, along with other community organizations such as the Knights of Pythias. Born September 27, 1885, he died on March 22, 1984, at the age of 98.

Scope and Contents

His papers contain correspondence relating to the church, paperwork for the Knights, ephemera from various events in the Rochester community, and both personal and business paperwork.

The George Walter Derham Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated by Melbourne and Myra Henry in November 2011.
