Biographical/Historical Note
James Allen Dumont was born on May 1, 1824, in Catskill, New York. After moving with his family to New York City, Dumont began a career in navigation, which continued until his retirement in 1903. During his career, he traveled to the East Indies, Brazil, Capetown and towns on the west coast of North and South America.

During the Civil War, Dumont served under General McClellan in the United States transport Croton. Most importantly, Dumont revised the charter rules for vessels used during the war, thus saving the government much needed funds. After the war, President Grant appointed Dumont Inspector General of Steam Vessels, reflecting Dumont's valuable service during the conflict.

John Allen Dumont died in June 1911.
