Scope and Contents

A collection of material by and about Elwell Stephen Otis (1838-1909), University of Rochester, Class of 1858. A soldier by profession, he held various positions including that of commander of the Department of the Pacific; and military governor of the Philippines, August 29, 1898 - May 5, 1900.

The collection includes a letterpress book of about 300 pages of Otis' typed outgoing correspondence, 1898-1900, much of it to Admiral Dewey; manuscript essays from his college days; and manuscript and typescript essays, undated and from the early 1900's, on such topics as colonial admin­istration, the Philippines, Indian experiences, and the Civil War. Also in the collection are two scrapbooks of clippings related to Otis, ca. 1898-1900, and a scrapbook of articles on his death and funeral.

The Elwell Stephen Otis Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Received as a gift of Dr. Nils W. Bolduan, March 1972, except for the Civil War manuscript articles in Box 2 which came from an earlier, unknown source.
