Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of seven archival boxes depicting the legal career of John M. Steele, Esquire, former Rochester Commissioner of Jurors and 12th Ward Alderman. The documents and business papers span the years 1836-1918. They include wills, deeds, mortgages, business correspondence, daily ledger and a book. The first two boxes are comprised of general corrspondence and box 3 contains general information of some of his legal documents. Box 4 and 5 contain the financial investments and last will and testament of Mr. and Mrs. James Marsh. The contents of box 6 relate to the estate of Mr. Charles Mertz. Box 7 contain 5 bound volumes.

The John M. Steele, Esquire Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was a gift from Stuart and Nancy Bolger on August 23, 2004. The material was recovered from the Steele family barn on Monroe Ave, Pittsford, NY.
