Biographical/Historical Note
Mr. Gannett was a prominent Unitarian minister in St. Paul, Minn. (1877-1883) and Rochester, N. Y. (1889-1908).

Scope and Content
This collection contains additions to the collection of William Channing Gannett Papers (A.G18). Mr. Gannett was a prominent Unitarian minister in St. Paul, Minn. (1877-1883) and Rochester, N. Y. (1889-1908).

The main portion of this collection consists of family correspondence to and from Mr. Gannett. Box 1 consists mainly of letters from William Channing Gannett to his father, Reverend Ezra Stiles Gannett during the period 1861-1865. Some of these letters were published in Letters from Port Royal, edited by Elizabeth Ware Pearson. (Boston, 1906). Also included are letters to his sister, Kate (Gannett) Wells, his wife, Mary Thorn (Lewis) Gannett and his children, Charlotte (Gannett) Mac Dowell and Lewis Stiles Gannett. Letters from members of the Lewis families are also included.

Additional correspondence to Mr. Gannett includes letters from friends and Unitarian leaders at the time of his 80th birthday in 1920. These letters recall his active role in the Western Unitarian Controversy, the education of freedmen at Port Royal, the temperance crusade, Unity magazine, Unitarian church organization, and his many kindnesses to members of the Rochester community. Speeches and newspaper clippings relating to these events are also in the collection.

A final box contains material including Gannett family memorabilia, printed material, and Lewis Stiles Gannett's biographical sketch about his parents.
