Biographical / Historical note

The Hakkoreoth, a Rochester, New York women's organization, was founded in 1897. Called the Monday Reading Club until 1901, the purpose of the club was "relaxation and reading." Meetings were held every two weeks from October to May with members taking turns hosting the meetings at their homes and reading passages from the selected books. The meetings also consisted of a business and a social period.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists primarily of minutes and programs of the Hakkoreoth, a Rochester, New York women's organization founded in 1897. Called the Monday Reading Club until 1901, the purpose of the club is "relaxation and reading". Meetings are held every two weeks from October to May with members taking turns hosting the meetings at their homes and reading passages from the selected books. The meetings also consist of a business and a social period.

Along with the minutes of the meetings from 1897 to 1967, the collection contains various club papers including a 1951 copy of the organization's constitution, and financial papers such as receipts, bank books and statements, and Treasurers' reports. Records of other club business is found in the annual programs which consist of membership and officer listings, meeting dates and often the selected topic or book for the meeting, and the hostesses and readers. Lastly, the collection includes correspondence dating from 1901 through 1969. Some of these letters are between members concerning club business. The majority however, are responses to expressions of sympathy from the club, and thank you notes received by members.

Printed yearly programs, including membership lists, for the following years have been removed from the collection and cataloged.

The Hakkoreoth Club Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
