Biographical/Historical note

Charles Dickens' novel Hard Times was adapted by Arthur Hopcraft into a four-episode television drama. It was filmed in England by Granada Television International and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Exxon (now ExxonMobil) Corporation, and public television stations. Each program contained an eight-minute sequence which developed a social/historical theme related to the novel. These were written and narrated by Asa Briggs, George Ford and Steven Marcus. The series was first shown in the United States in May 1977, and repeated in February 1978.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of photocopies of the typed first draft and synopsis of the television series, with the grant proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanities for funding and the printed viewers' guide by George Ford and Steven Marcus.
