Biographical / Historical note

Helen Power, born on May 2, 1904 served on the New York State Board of Regents from the late 1960s- 1975. During her time on the board, the regents confronted issues including integrating public schools through a busing initiative and expanding the state's higher education system by founding additional state colleges and universities. According to information provided by the New York State Education Department website, the Regents are 'responsible for the general supervision of all educational activities within the State, presiding over The University and the New York State Education Department.' Helen Power died on January 12, 1995, having spent the majority of her adult life living in Rochester, New York.

Scope and Contents

The Helen Power Papers are divided into five series: General Board of Regents Business, Committee Meetings and Conferences, Proposals, Reports, Published and Printed Materials. The series General Board of Regents Business contains correspondence written to and from Power, as well as to other members of the Board, materials related to issue campaigns and addresses made to the Board as well as other community groups. The second series, Committee Meetings and Conferences includes materials from weekly and monthly meetings held between 1973 and 1975. The third series includes proposals and recommendations made by and to the Board. Similarly, the fourth series, Reports contains drafts and final versions of documents submitted for the Board's approval. The final series is comprised of newsletters published and sent to Power and others during the early 1970s, as well as newspaper articles and other printed materials related to education.

Access

The Helen Powers Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

Use

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Helen Power Papers were made a gift from Helen Power in November, December 1977.
