Biographical / Historical note

The members of the Arts Council of Rochester, or the Monroe Arts Council (MARC), formed their organization to be "dedicated to the preservation and development of the Arts for the enrichment of our civic life by providing channels through which its member groups can share their talents and resources with one another and the community." This preamble to their Constitution outlines the main goals of MARC. The members created summer camp programs for children and artist-in-residency opportunities for community members, and they worked with other cultural institutions in the Monroe County area to promote and develop the arts.

Scope and Contents

The Monroe Arts Council Collection documents the community work of the participants to support the arts in Monroe County and surrounding areas during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The collection is comprised of four series: Governance, Financial Records, Programs and Public Relations. The Governance materials include documents related to the Council's history and its members. The Financial Records include expenditures for programming, staff payroll information, and budget documents. The third series, Programs, detail the Council's outreach efforts. The final series, Public Relations, is comprised principally of newspaper clippings and press releases that document how the members of the Council and their programs worked to promote the arts.
