Biographical / Historical note

Joseph O'Connor (born Tribes Hill, Montgomery County, New York, December 17, 1841; died Rochester, New York, October 9, 1908) graduated from the University of Rochester in 1863 and was admitted to the bar in 1869. While studying law, he was editor of the Rochester Democrat. During 1874 and 1875 he was editor of the Indianapolis Sentinel and from 1875 to 1879 he was an editorial writer on the New York World. Between 1879 and 1886 he worked on the Buffalo Courier. In 1886, he became editor of the Rochester Post Express. where lie remained except for two years, 1896 to 1898, when he was editor of the Buffalo Enquirer. The column he wrote for the Post Express was called "The Rochesterian." A collection of his editorials, poems, and articles which had appeared in this column were compiled into a two volume book, also entitled The Rochesterian, and published in 1911.

Scope and Contents

The Joseph O'Connor Papers are comprised of three boxes containing poems and essays written by Joseph O'Connor. There is also some material relating to his wife, Evangeline (Johnson) O'Connor, and his daughter, Evelyn O'Connor, who graduated from the University of Rochester in 1903. This latter material includes some correspondence, 1947-1948 and undated, and several travel diaries, 1895-1951.

The Joseph O'Connor Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

Use

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was received from the Princeton University Library, December 9, 1964. Additions in Box 1 and all of Box 3 were given by John Edwin Foster, May 1975. Material in Box 1, folder 11 transferred from the Local History Division of the Rochester Public Library, May 21, 2007.
