William Dean Howells (1837 - 1919), author, critic and editor. Papers consist mostly of correspondence, the largest group of letters being those written to Robert Underwood Johnson (1853 - 1937), editor of Century Magazine and author. Letters to other literary figures such as Will Carleton, Henry Mills Alden and Richard Watson Gilder are also in the collection. Howell's letters mention, among other things, his publications, his affiliation with the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and other organizations, and his friendship with Mark Twain.
