Biographical/Historical note

John Edward Hoffmeister (1899-1991) earned his degrees from Johns Hopkins University; an A.B. in chemistry in 1920 and a Ph.D. in Geology in 1923. He came to the University of Rochester in 1923 as a geology instructor. In 1928 he became a full professor, and in 1946 the chairman of the geology department. He served as Dean for the College of Men from 1942 to 1943, and as Dean of the faculty for the College of Arts and Sciences from 1943 to 1944. From 1944 to 1956 he was the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Hoffmeister retired in June of 1964.

Scope and Contents

The papers consist of two volumes of typescripts of Dr. Hoffmeister's speeches, convocation addresses, commencement addresses, radio talks, writings, etc., from 1934 to 1960. At the beginning of each volume there is a table of contents.

The John Edward Hoffmeister Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
