George M. Grier papers

 Collection
Identifier: A.G84

Biographical/Historical note

George M. Grier and William H. Seward were executors of the estate of Samuel S. Seward and these papers contain considerable information on financial matters connected with the settlement of the estate.

Scope and Contents

The George M. Grier papers contain 525 letters in 31 folders; 12 folders of financial papers, 4 folders of legal papers; 1 folder of family history; 1 folder of circulars of the S. S. Seward Institute; 1 folder of papers etc. of the Post Office, Florida, N.Y.; and 3 maps.

The letters are chiefly of family interest. Those written by Mary Evans Grier to her parents (Mr. and Mrs. George M. Grier) and sister while she was in Washington in 1857 and 1858 at the home of Senator and Mrs. William H. Seward are of particular interest. There are also several letters from William H. Seward to George M. Grier, to his daughter, Mary Grier, and to his father, Samuel S. Seward. Mr. Grier was a trustee of the Seward Institute in Florida, N.Y. which accounts for the letters concerning that institution from Thomas G. Schriver and Mary E. Hotchkiss.
