Biographical/Historical note

George Spencer Edwards (1837-1916) was an English journalist and drama critic. He joined the staff of the Era, 1870; became chief of the editorial staff and remained for more than twenty years. Mr. Spencer was a contributor to Referee, writing above the nom de plume "Carados" (1877-1911); contributor to the periodical Funny Folks and Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News; author of numerous short stories; and drama critic to Lloyd's Newspaper for a considerable time.

Scope and Contents note

The George Spencer Edwards papers consist of contains correspondence from theatrical people requesting that Edwards publish personal news items concerning their activities in future columns of the Referee. Portraits of Lady Helena Saville (Faucit) Martin and J. B. Buckstone, theatrical newsclippings and autograph signatures from fragmented letters are included in the collection.

The George Spencer Edwards Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.
