Biographical/Historical note
Edwin F. Jaeckle (1894-1992) was a lawyer known for his support of Thomas E. Dewey. As chairman of the party in the 1930s, Jaeckle was the only Republican leader to back Dewey when he announced his candidacy for governor in 1938. Although he lost to incumbent Herbert H. Lehman, Jaeckle is credited with bringing Dewey to national attention. Jaeckle later served as campaign chairman for Dewey's 1944 presidential run and remained one of Dewey's primary advisors and mentors throughout his political career. Jaeckle is also famous for enforcing tight discipline within the New York State Republican Party and fortifying its standing within the state.
Jaeckle, a graduate of the University of Buffalo Law School, was also a successful private attorney. His firm Jaeckle, Fleischmann & Mugel is still in existence. The Edwin F. Jaeckle Center for State and Local Democracy, a multidisciplinary research unit, was established in 1980 thanks to a generous gift from Edwin Jaeckle and his wife Erma.
