Biographical/Historical note
Jacob Bernstein was the son of Philip and Sophie (Rubin) Bernstein, and brother of Meyer Bernstein. He began working as a stage-hand ("property man") at the Eastman Theatre in the 1920s. His correspondence and meticulously assembled scrapbooks reflect his strong interest in the theatre.
Scope and Contents
The correspondence in this collection concerns the theatre in the 1930s, labor relations in the 1940s, and requests for decoration for World War II military service, as well as personal correspondence. The scrapbooks contain theatrical images and clippings from playbills from 1909-1921.
Related Archival Materials
Rare Books & Special Collections also holds the papers of Bernstein's brother, Meyer (D.107, Meyer Bernstein Papers). Jacob Bernstein's recollections of the Eastman Theatre and George Eastman can be found in Box 1, Folder 2 of the Butterfield-Eastman Papers and in Box 9, Folder 2 of the George Eastman Papers.
