Josiah T. Miller family papers
Scope and Contents
The Papers of the Josiah T. Miller Family of Seneca Falls, New York consist of two distinct groups of correspondence, totaling 270 letters, and a small group of miscellaneous printed and manuscript material.
The first group of letters, 1843-1863, contains 70 letters of a local and regional business and political nature. They are addressed to Josiah T. Miller and include correspondence from Lewis Cass, James DeMott, P.C. Headley, and Henry O'Rielly. A list of those letters indexed is included in this register.
The second group of letters, concentrating on the period 18761889, is primarily family correspondence, containing letters written home by Maynard and Edward, the sons of Josiah T. Miller. Maynard went from New York to Kansas City, Missouri in November 1877, and eventually became a traveling salesman for D. Austin & Co., jobbers of pumps, pipe, and steel goods. In December 1881, he changed to English Bros., a jobber of similar goods. Edward went to Kansas City in January 1883, and became an accountant for English Bros. Their correspondence discusses the personal affairs of every day living, including descriptions of Maynard's travels and Edward's work. Correspondence to Edward from various friends, including 18 letters from Walter Curtis, is also found in the collection.
A group of 9 letters by Philo White, Whitesboro, New York to Josiah T. Miller, 1874-1875, relates to the fight to prevent legislative amendments changing the exemption of churches from taxation.
