Legal papers, correspondence and other papers of Elijah Miller (1772-1851). Auburn lawyer and judge and father-in-law of William Henry Seward.

The legal papers and correspondence deal mostly with real estate transactions in Auburn and Cayuga County during the early 1800s, and with matters relating to the settlement of Judge Miller's estate. Other material includes Judge Miller's bank books, records of court proceedings, maps of real estate transactions, genealogical records and copies of Judge Miller's wills.

The Elijah Miller Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

The Elijah Miller papers were part of the Seward papers presented to the University of Rochester by William Henry Seward III in 1950. (Bequest)
