The geologist, Edwin Eugene Howell, 1845-1911, was born in Genesee County, New York. He took part in the Wheeler Surveys west of the 100th meridian in 1872-1873 and the Powell Survey of the Rocky Mountain region in 1874. He is believed to have made the first U.S. relief model in 1871, modeling the island of Santo Domingo. His relief models were exhibited at World's Fairs from 1876-1910. Howell was the author of a Report on the Geology of Portions of Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico in Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, 1875.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes detailed and illustrated field notes of his geological expeditions in the years 1872-1874, a loose-leaved geological report, personal diaries 1867-1911, account books and miscellaneous notes, newspaper clippings, etc.

The Edwin Eugene Howell Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was presented to the University of Rochester Library by Mrs. D. Dale Condit, daughter of Edwin E. Howell, and was received on August 12, 1969 and December 8, 1969.
