Biographical / Historical note

Raymond Dexter Havens (1880-1954) was the editor of Modern Language Notes and a professor of English at the University of Rochester, 1908-1925, and at Johns Hopkins University from 1925-1947.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence written by Raymond Dexter Havens from France to family and friends while he was engaged as a Y.M.C.A. volunteer, 1917-1919, letters written to Raymond Dexter Havens from Cecilia Beaux (1863-1942), American painter, and letters from other scholars to Raymond Dexter Havens. There is also a collection of classroom registers from his English classes at the University of Rochester, 1909-1925.

The Raymond Dexter Havens Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.
