Scope and Contents

The collection consists chiefly of positive photostats of a group of letters written by Horace Greeley (1811-1872) to Harrison Howard concerning the establishment of the People's College, Havana, New York, copied from originals in the Regional History Collection, Cornell University. There are also original letters written by Greeley to various people.

The Horace Greeley Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

Use

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Original letters gift of Charles A. Brown, 1914 and Robert F. Metzdorf, January 30, 1969, and purchased from Mary A. Benjamin, October 6, 1948, and from Bodley Bookshop, November 16, 1948, and Walter Benjamin, March 12, 1949, and April 11, 1949.
