Biographical/Historical note

Elizabeth May Fisher was born in Fairport, New York, graduating from Fairport High School in 1936. She attended the University of Rochester and graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Distinction in Fine Arts. She fulfilled one of the major requirements for that degree program by writing a prize essay entitled "The Civic and Ecclesiastical Architecture of the Genesee Country, 1785-1850, Including the Early Republican and Greek Revival Styles of Architecture." The essay consists of three bound volumes with approximately 550 plates in volumes II and III, and is housed in the Art Library. She continued her work in the arts by receiving her Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1944. She married William John Scharffenberger.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence between Elizabeth M. Fisher, and elderly people who resided in Monroe, Livingston, Ontario and Wayne Counties for many years. She requested them to send her information and/or photographs concerning the old (1785-1850) town church buildings. Also included are letters from her father, F. W. Fisher, requesting similar information from his correspondents. The collection also consists of notes, photographs., drafts of papers, newspaper clippings and other material on local architecture.

The Elizabeth May Fisher Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.
