Biographical/Historical note

Eugene Herbert Arnold (1847-1924) was variously employed as a salesman and advertising agent. He was also a partner in Arnold and Van De Venter, a dry goods store on West Avenue, in 1887. He married Helen Davenport Burns (1849-1926), a teacher at the Livingston Park Seminary from 1870-1873, in September 1873, and they had three children. The children were Walter Whipple Arnold (1875-1924), Louise Arnold (1877-1950), and James Burns Arnold (1881-1957). The Arnold family lived at various addresses on West Avenue until 1890, when they moved to South Washington Street, where they lived until 1914. The last home of the elder Arnolds was on Mt. Hope Avenue. Louise Arnold married in 1904 Edward Blaine Fenner, later admiral in the U.S. Navy.

James Burns Arnold was trained in the architectural office of Claude F. Bragdon. He was employed there from 1897 to 1915, when he left to form a partnership with Herbert Stern which lasted until 1932. He continued in practice until his death in 1957. Arnold designed houses for both upper and middle income families, and a number of public buildings in Rochester and Monroe county, including churches, libraries, and office buildings.

Scope and Contents

Series II: Arnold family photographs contains photographs of the family, both single portraits and family photo albums, primarily from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Series III: Arnold & Stern architectural drawings contains the plans and blueprints for a select number of buildings designed by James B. Arnold's firm, Arnold & Stern. The projects are largely residential, with one library and one grandstand for the LeRoy High School.
