Biographical/Historical note
Truman Jay Backus (1842-1908) received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester in 1864, and his Master of Arts degree in 1867. From 1867 to 1893 he was Professor of Rhetoric and Literature at Vassar College.
In 1883 he received his Doctorate from the University of Rochester and from 1883 until his death in 1908, he was the President of Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, New York.
Scope and Contents
The diary, written by Backus in 1861, describes his life as a student at the University of Rochester. The diary covers the second semester of his freshman year and the first semester of his sophomore year.
