Biographical/Historical note

John Haas was born in 1821 in Alsace-Lorraine, France and immigrated to the United States, where he subsequently worked as a men’s boot and shoe maker. John married Margaret Ernwein (b. 1831) and together they had two children, Alfred John Haas (b. 1857) and Carrie Haas (b. 1866). The J. Haas & Son shop was located on the corner of 22 Front St. and Exchange Place in Rochester, New York. After John Haas's death in ca. 1896, his son, Alfred continued the business.

Scope and Contents

The J. Haas & Son Company Papers includes mortgage and lease papers, customer invoices, business correspondence and account books. The collection's date range spans 1876-1912.
