Library: library science courses
Biographical/Historical note
From 1948 to 1952 the University of Rochester offered a series of four courses in library science. The program was designed to help address an acute national shortage of librarians by training students in the fundamentals of the profession before they enrolled in formal library school. The courses were conducted by the University School of Liberal and Applied Sciences, which offered part-time university study to working adults and returned servicemen. Classes were held in the late afternoon, evenings, and Saturdays.
The library science courses were taught by John Russell, the librarian at the University of Rochester from 1940-1969. The course titles were Reference Work and Bibliography, Library Organization and Administration, Book Selection and Subject Bibliography, and Cataloguing and Classification.
