Biographical/Historical note

The Blind Alley Club was a men's social group that met monthly for lunch and themed discussion. Notable members included Dr. Willson H. Coates; Herbert Lansdale; James Spinning UR1913, the Rochester Superintendent of Schools; Donald B. Gilchrist, University Librarian; and Dr. Howard Hanson, Director of the Eastman School of Music. The Blind Alley Club ran from 1932 to 1943, but was eventually revived as the Twenty Club, who were still meeting each Friday at Sibley's Tower Restaurant in the mid-1980s.

Donald Gilchrist served as the Blind Alley Club's secretary for eight years and was succeeded in November 1936 by Leroy Snyder.

Scope and Contents

Included in the collection are correspondence and other material related to Leroy Snyder, including his work in labor relations and involvement with the Rochester City Club.

The Blind Alley Club Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Blind Alley Club Papers were donated in December 1984 by Marjory Storey, the sister-in-law of James Spinning.
