Biographical / Historical note

Dr. William Harold Dunn (1898-1955) was a member of the University of Rochester Class of 1923. He received his MD from Harvard in 1927 and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, seeing action in the Southwest Pacific and earning the Legion of Merit. Dunn was then employed as a consultant during the Nuremberg Trials. One of his duties was the clinical assessment of suspected Nazi war criminals, including the infamous Rudolf Hess. In civilian life Dr. Dunn was an associate professor of Clinical Psychology at the Medical College in New York and associate attending psychiatrist at The New York Hospital.

Scope and Contents

The papers contain many interesting documents related to Dunn's work at Nuremberg, as well as many papers and articles he wrote throughout his career. Articles and other material related to Hess and the Third Reich were added by Frederick Dunn after his father's death.

The William H. Dunn Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

Use

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The William H. Dunn Papers were donated in November 2011 by his son, Dr. Frederick Dunn, through local relative Richard LeRoy.
