Biographical / Historical note

Adolph Stuber (1889-1984) was born in Louisville, Kentucky. His father William G. Stuber was a photographer and chemist who joined the Eastman Kodak Company in 1894 and succeeded George Eastman as President in 1925. Adolph followed in his father's footsteps and joined Kodak shortly after receiving his bachelors in mechanical engineering from Cornell in 1912. He became General Manager of Camera Works in 1923 and was transferred to the Sales Department as Assistant Vice President in 1933. He was promoted to Vice President for Sales in 1942, becoming Vice President for Sales and Advertising three years later. He is best known as the creator of Kodak's Colorama exhibit, which appeared in Grand Central Terminal from 1950 to 1990. Stuber also helped develop the first metal-frame camera. Adolph Stuber was elected to the Board of Directors on February 18, 1947. He retired from management in 1954 and from the Board in 1962.

Scope and Contents

On June 11-13, 1976 an interview with Adolph Stuber was conducted by Reese Jenkins, a Visiting Associate Professor of History at the University of Rochester and an authority on twentieth century science and technology. W. Allen Wallis also participated for the first half hour and made Super 8 sound films of over an hour of conversation. The collection includes several transcripts of the interview, related correspondence, a Super 8 motion picture film with sound track, and recordings of the interview.

The Adolph Stuber Interview Collection is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

The Adolph Stuber Interview Collection was donated by W. Allen Wallis in April 1981 and November 1982. .
