More features from our Special Collections

A winter day in Palmyra, NY is captured in this photograph taken about 100 years ago. It is part of a collection of 312 glass plate negatives of photographs taken by a member of the Garlock family. The images of people, activities, events, street scenes, houses, and pets provide a glimpse into everyday life in a small upstate New York town life during the period of 1890 to 1910. The photographs can be seen on the Department’s website. The glass plate negatives were a gift of John M. Topham in 1974. The printing of the negatives was made possible through funds provided by New York State for the conservation of materials in research libraries.Palmyra in the snow
