The collection of the Monroe County Penitentiary Papers, Addition is added material to the collection D.48 Monroe County Penitentiary Papers. The time span for these added materials housed in 7 oversized boxes is 1882-1906. They include Board of Prisoners for different years. These lists include names of prisoners, offense, date of arrest, date disposed, turnkey fee. The materials also include forms for serving subpoenas and warrants; the account and certificates of the Game and Fish Protectors and also expenses by each town in the county.

Scope and Contents

This box contains 321 inmate identification cards that include the inmate's name, prison term and dates, criminal act and previous record. The cards also describe physical information about the inmate including: height, race, length of head, ears, and feet, information about their teeth, nose, hair, complexion, and weight. The cards also identify age, date of birth, nativity, and occupation. Crimes range from stealing milk or a young pig, to cutting a girl's face with a razor. With the exception of two African American male inmates, the cards all identify white males.

The Monroe County Penitentiary Papers Addition. is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.
