PERSONAL MISCELLANY

"Personal miscellany" includes material by and about PSB that fits neatly into no other section of his papers. Within this section, folders are grouped into eight rather broad categories, and within each category are arranged chronologically, insofar as can be determined:

  • Biographical material. This includes his autobiography, other autobiographical writings, interviews, and biographical sketches for publications such as Who's Who and agencies such as the Jewish Lecture Bureau, with associated correspondence.
  • Articles. Chiefly newspaper clippings; for most of these, dates, and title of newspaper, are impossible to ascertain.
  • Honors. Awards, certificates, prizes, and associated correspondence.
  • Photographs. These are chiefly of PSB, and include others where indicated. The photographs vary greatly in size and quality, from small amateur snapshots to large professionally-taken glossies. Most are unmarked and undated, with no indication of venue or individuals pictured, making organization tentative. Some photographs are damaged (wrinkled, torn, water-marked, etc.). Some are mounted on paper, as for an exhibition. A few of these folders also contain some correspondence.
  • Travel. These folders include such miscellany as correspondence, airline tickets, hotel and other receipts, itineraries, postcards, newspaper and magazine clippings, etc.; some of this material dates from before and after the trip to which they relate. Only the most important type of contents of each folder is mentioned.
  • Financial and legal miscellany, such as income tax forms, and related correspondence.
  • Papers. Correspondence and other material having to do with the disposition of PSB's papers.
  • Philip S. Bernstein Professorship in Jewish Studies (University of Rochester)
  • Miscellaneous, for all other material.
