Biographical/Historical note
The Rochester chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society was established in January 1887 as the New York Iota chapter. It was the twenty-seventh chapter formed since the honor society was founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776. Additional information may be found in Arthur J. May's History of the University of Rochester (see under "P" in the book's index). The Iota chapter remains active at the University of Rochester.
Scope and Contents note
The Phi Beta Kappa Iota of New York Papers begin in 1886 and are ongoing. The collection includes materials relating to the history and governance of the Iota chapter; membership and initiation; finances; programs and events, both locally and at the regional or national level; and other topics.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note
Box 3, Folder 14 of the Phi Beta Kappa Papers, as well as two PBK keys (placed in the University Archives Museum Objects collection), were received in 1975 from Edward R. Becker, interim secretary of the local chapter. The copy of the certificate of incorporation in Box 3, Folder 15 was received from Becker on March 22, 1976. Boxes 4-6 were received from Sarah Collins Caldwell on August 16, 1983. Box 6, Folder 5 was received from Harold Stanley on August 20, 1985. Boxes 7-11 were transferred by Tom Cassada on May 16, 2000. Boxes 14-16 were transferred by Karen Berger, president of the Iota chapter, in 2016. Volume 2 was transferred in 2018.
