Biographical / Historical note

Enos Thompson Throop (1784-1874) was an upstate New York lawyer, jurist, and politician who was governor of New York state from 1829-1832. Upon the completion of his term of office, he received appointments as the naval officer for the Port of New York, 1833-1838 and charge d'affaires for the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, 1838-1842. He lived most of his adult life at "Willowbrook," his home near Auburn, except for the years 1847-1857 which he spent at "Springbrook" near Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 1814, he married Evelina Vredenburgh who died in 1834. Although none of their children survived infancy, he had many nieces and nephews, both on his and his wife's side, who corresponded with him.

Scope and Contents

Included in the Papers are approximately 150 letters. Most of them were written by members of the family and thus are of a personal or business nature. Some letters, after 1834, deal with life, investments, and land promotion in Michigan. All the correspondence has been indexed in the main manuscript index. Family correspondents include: Mrs. Evelina (Vredenburgh) Throop, his wife; Mrs. Elizabeth T. (Porter) Beach, his wife's niece; Mrs. Eliza (Akin) Cuyler, his niece; and Montgomery Hunt Throop, his nephew. Non-family correspondents include: Benjamin Franklin Butler, lawyer; Samuel Clark, lawyer and politician; James Lorimer Graham, President of the Metropolitan Insurance Company; John Stilwell Jenkins, lawyer and newspaper editor; and Jabez Hammond, lawyer, politician and author. In addition to the correspondence, there are approximately 35 other manuscript pieces of a financial, legal, or political nature. Of particular interest are the several items of a political nature preceding and during the War of 1812.
