Biographical / Historical note

The Real Estate Board of Rochester, N.Y., Inc. is a professional organization of real estate agents in the Rochester area. Established in 1910, it tries to maintain high ethical standards among its members and establish commission rates in the case of multiple-listed properties. A primary function of the Board is to arbitrate disputes between representatives of different realty companies over the award of commission fees and breaches in the Board's rules and code of ethics. The arbiters are themselves members of the Real Estate Board and its legal consultant presides over the meeting.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of papers from the files of E. Reed Shutt, of the law firm of Reed and Shutt, the Real Estate Board's legal counsel for almost fifty years. They include awards of Arbitration Boards from the year 1951 to the year 1973, a copy of the Board's lease of office space, by-laws to the Salesmen's Council, and legal opinions on various matters such as the wording of sales contracts, definitions of terms, and the establishment of commission rates given by Mr. Shutt.
