Biographical / Historical note
Edwin George Munn was born in Munson, Massachusetts in 1804. The family moved to LeRoy, N.Y. while he was a child. He had at least one brother, John S. Munn (d. 1831), and two sisters Emily Munn (d. 184-) and Fanny (Munn) Pixley (1811-1893). E.G. Munn studied medicine under Stephen O. Almy in LeRoy, N.Y. and at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Fairchild N.Y. and at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, 1833-1834. He practiced in Scottsville, N.Y. from 1828 to 1837, and then moved to Rochester where he practiced until his death in 1847. While in Scottsville, he began to specialize in the treatment of diseases of the eyes, and his reputation spread throughout the state of New York and into the neighboring states. Dr. Munn treated cases of inflammation and glaucoma and operated to remove cataracts. He married Aristeen Pixley (1817-1918) in 1834. Their first son died as an infant. The surviving children were Frances Emily (Munn) Field (1844-1873) and John Pixley Munn (1846-1931). Edwin George Munn died December 12, 1847, after a sudden illness, and was buried in Mt.
