James H. Johnson architectural drawings
Biographical / Historical note
James J. Johnson (1932-2016) was a Rochester-based architect. He is well known for designing several Rochester-area landmarks, including the "Mushroom House," the Liberty Pole in downdown Rochester, and the Phillis Wheatley Library. He also notably designed many religious buildings in the Rochester area, including Temple Sinai in Brighton, St. John the Evangelist Church in Greece, and St. Januarius Church in Naples. His distinct style has been described as organic modernism, often featuring cast concrete.
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a single series, containing the architectural drawings of James H. Johnson, architect. The drawings date from 1964-2001. The materials have been ordered and boxed by job number, using Johnson's own job numbers. Researchers should note that the collection does not contain a full run of Johnson's work, and the numbers skip accordingly.

The James H. Johnson architectural drawings are open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation, River Campus Libraries, University of Rochester prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.
